Chickens give you fresh eggs and manure for the garden, and many people keep them as pets too.

Chickens will peck at almost anything, so it's up to you to make sure what they eat is good for them. A common question from new owners is whether chickens can eat hamster food.

Can chickens eat hamster food? A small amount of plain hamster food won't usually hurt an adult chicken. But hamster food is made for hamsters, not poultry, so it doesn't give chickens the balance of protein, calcium and other nutrients they need. Use it only as a short stopgap, never as their main feed.

Can Chickens Eat Hamster Food?

Most hamster food is a mix of seeds, grains and dried vegetables, sometimes with pellets. Plain mixes are generally safe for chickens to peck at.

The problem is balance. Laying hens need a lot of calcium for eggshells. The Extension Foundation's small-flock guide says layer feeds typically contain 2.5% to 3.5% calcium, and hamster food is not formulated to supply that.

If you run out of chicken feed, a little hamster food can tide your flock over for a day. Buy proper poultry feed as soon as you can.

Can Chicks Eat Hamster Food?

No. Chicks have different needs from adult hens. They need a high-protein starter feed for fast growth, not extra calcium.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System lists starter diets for young egg-type chicks at about 20% to 22% crude protein. It also warns that feeding a high-calcium layer diet to young birds can cause improper bone formation and kidney failure.

Hamster food doesn't match either need, so keep chicks on chick starter and don't let it run out.

What Should You Check Before Giving Your Chickens Hamster Food?

If you do use hamster food in a pinch, check a few things first:

  • Check the expiration date and look for mold. Moldy feed can make chickens sick.
  • Skip hamster treats. They are often high in sugar and are not a meal substitute.
  • Look for pantry moths or insects in the bag. Throw out infested food.

What Should Your Chickens Eat?

A complete commercial poultry feed made for your birds' age and purpose should be most of their diet. Layer feed for laying hens, starter or grower feed for young birds.

Laying hens can also have free-choice oyster shell for extra calcium and grit to help grind food. Growing chickens should not get oyster shell or layer feed, because too much calcium can damage their kidneys.

Vegetables, greens and some fruit are fine as small treats. Keep treats to a small part of the diet, and avoid moldy, salty or sugary processed foods.

Final Verdict

Chickens can eat a little hamster food if you run out of feed, but it is not a balanced diet for them. Never feed it to chicks, and get your flock back on proper poultry feed as soon as possible. If a bird seems unwell after a diet change, contact a vet who treats poultry.
